Okay. It pains me to admit this, but I have done some time recently in the online dating world. And if my friends are any measure of what’s popular, so have you. (Come on, admit it. You know you have.)
So why are we doing it? Because it works. At least for some people. I have yet to find my soulmate online, but I can see at least three reasons why others might be finding theirs:
1. They write unique personal ads that “speak” directly to their ideal match. Mostly with humor.
2. They post out-of-the-ordinary (but flattering) photos that tell a story about who they really are.
3. They aren’t afraid to reveal the deeper (sometimes weirder) parts of themselves.
All lessons I believe we can (and should) apply to our own marketing — especially when it comes to the online kind. Because really, don’t you want to find that one gorgeous and wealthy fabulous customer who will be with you forever?
Okay. Then where do we start?
Try answering some of those dating questions from the perspective of your business. This is going to take more than a couple of drafts to get it just right, so don’t hurry the process. In case you’ve forgotten what those are, I’ve listed some About Yourself Questions here:
What are your interests? What do you like to do in your spare time? What are some of your favorite hangouts? What are some of your favorite things? What have you read lately? What interests would you like to share with your ideal customer? What are your values? Your political views? Spiritual views? What gets you out of bed in the morning? What are you most passionate about?
The funny thing is we like to do business with people we like. And we tend to like (and trust) people who are like us. So your answers about yourself will most likely apply to your ideal customer. Okay? Now answer those same questions in relation to that person or organization you’re hot for.
Got your answers? Good, now you’re ready to write your first ad. And not just any ad, but one that grabs (and holds) the attention of the person you’re after.
Great bloggers already do this. They use a conversational tone in their writing that says, “I’m right here in the room with you.” They use their own voices — not some hoity-toity, grammatically correct version of themselves. And their readers connect with them. Over and over again.
Try it for yourself. Post your ad on your website, your Facebook Fan page and anywhere else you think might attract this type of person. You just might start to believe that marketing can be fun. And profitable.
Here’s my personal/business ad. (It’s a work-in-progress. Your feedback is appreciated.) And of course you are encouraged to share yours with us too.
